Online Proposal to Teach an Extra-Departmental Freshman Seminar (FRS1)

Professors wishing to teach an extra-departmental Freshman Seminar must complete this form and submit it with a one-page expanded course outline. If you have taught the seminar previously and have made no changes in content or format, just fill out this form instead. A copy will be sent to the department chair for approval.

Approved proposals will be retained by the Freshman Seminar Program Committee and will be reviewed periodically by the Committee on Courses of Instruction.

Proposed Time and Place
Note: The Freshman Seminar carries one or two units and must involve at least 10 contact hours during the quarter for a 1-unit course, or 20 contact hours for a 2-unit course. Laboratory work, site visits, and field work may be included in a seminar's design at the rate of three outside hours counting as one contact hour. In all cases, the seminar's syllabus must make clear to the students time commitments other than those normally scheduled.

We encourage instructors to find a conference room in their department that can be scheduled for this seminar. If you cannot suggest a room, we will get you a room assignment from the office of the registrar.

Seminar Proposal
Please attach a one to two page seminar proposal following the outline below:
  1. A paragraph describing the course content.
  2. The seminar's goals for student learning, noting intended changes in knowledge, attitudes, awareness, skills, etc.
  3. Weekly schedule and field trips, if appropriate.
  4. Required activities outside regularly scheduled contact hours including readings, group work and film viewing.
  5. Requirements and grading criteria. At least half of the grade should be based on oral or written assignments, such as reports, papers, etc. Final exams strongly discouraged.
